I explored New Delhi close to my hotel a little last night after a little kip in my room. The streets are dark and illuminated mainly by the car headlights. The paths and pavements were broken and dusty. In dark spots I could spy people squatting and sitting huddled up in their wraps and clothes and sometimes it was a surprise to see them. I felt I was invading their space.
I have a strong sense of being an outsider tonight, of being different and it was a little uncomfortable taking photos as if I am invading their world to capture images of them. Yet some stop and start to smile when they see me with the camera and even wave at me, which is lovely and friendly.
I do feel separate in being a woman, 'blonde' and white skinned as well as being alone here. But it's not a feeling of danger or threatening. It's definitely a unique experience. I'm also aware I don't know what's OK to do and being tired I don't want to make silly or risky choices. I also guess because where I walked did not seem to be a tourist resort but just in a living city, a place where many people eek a living selling stuff on the pavements by torchlight it will feel different. Mostly on the stall it's just one kind of item eg men's socks, or men's coats and some of them look just like jumble sales.
There are dogs everywhere but I've not seen any cats. The dogs are lean but not bothersome at all and take their chances crossing the roads with the traffic.
It was quite cool while I walked so not really promenading conditions and being tired I did not stay out too long but went back to the hotel and went to look for some supper. Fish tikka was cooled with mint yoghurt and very nice. Tetley teabags in my room plus a kettle was also very welcome!
