Arrival! I am in India!

This page starts with my first thoughts and perceptions on arrival at last in India. I was met at the airport by Mayank and the Seikh driver but did not catch his name. Mayank is just 26 and very western in style and dress, especially compared to the driver with his regal-looking turban and steely grey beard. I wish I had taken their photos as I won't now see them again.

The drive into New Delhi from the airport was chaotic and car drivers seem convinced they can squeeze in alongside each other, and mostly they do succeed or honk their horns for someone to make room for them. Nobody takes any notice whatsoever of the lanes painted on the road and it is a free for all of cars, cycles, tuck tucks (Spelling??) , dogs and scooters. My driver spotted someone he knew also driving so pulled along beside him and had a chat through the open windows - all at a good driving speed. Other people in cars and on the roadside look at me and many smile and some even wave. People do seem mostly very smiley here.

Finally we got to the hotel in Connaught Place area, after passing the President's Palace and a large cricket ground and I was pleased to lie down in the hotel properly and take a nap! The travel was tiring and it was a full-on introduction to a big city of 11 million people.

Glad to be here certainly, and ready to continue the adventure a little more on foot this evening in my surrounds.

Senses?
Well the colours of the flowers in the gardens as we drove to the hotel were lovely.
Sounds are everywhere, especially the cars hooting and hooting at each other! There was also what looked like a party pop-up near to the hotel with loud Indian music playing - seemed a bit like a karaoke.
Smells - pungent smells filled the Seikh's car of cinnamon and  cloves I think
And tastes - the fish was spicy but lovely with the yoghurt. Not to mention the chocolates in my room...
